That moment when you realize you’ve made an incredible mistake….
For Prof. Don Tillman it came around page 282 of The Rosie Project when he declares “I can’t believe I’ve been so stupid. Irrational!” **SPOILER ALERT** Prof. Tillman created the Wife Project.. a lengthy questionnaire, used to find a potential life partner in an extensive online dating type scenario. To no avail. But in the process does meet a woman whom he becomes, well, lets just say, they become very, very good friends. She is definitely not life-long partner material. Rosie “failed almost every criterion…” And yet, Prof. Tillman explains… “I want to spend my life with you even though it’s totally irrational… The only logical conclusion is that I must be in love with you.” Rosie thinks the professor is pretty great.. weird and kind of quirky.. but “the smartest, funniest person” she knows.
It was only when faced with the prospect of not having Rosie in his life, at all, that the professor realized what a fool he had been. He realized he’d made an incredible mistake. First in creating the so-called Wife Project, in that he created, in his mind, someone who could not, someone who did not, exist. No one, on paper, would ever live up to his expectations. That, kept him from dating. Which kept him from falling in love. Which, in turn, kept his heart safe. What an incredible mistake that was!
