Ding dong the witch is dead! Take a look at this editorial by Houston Chronicle cartoonist Nick Anderson. If you’ve never seen Nick’s work before, he comes up with some pretty brilliant stuff. And this, is no exception.
I despise Fred Phelps. I despise people like Fred Phelps. People like him give Christians a bad name. The Westboro Baptist Church gives Christianity a bad name. (As if it weren’t having enough trouble on its own.) These yahoos, under Phelps’ leadership, picketed and protested everything in the name of religion. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for exercising freedom of speech. I do it every day as a matter of earning a living. But above believing in freedom of speech, there are two other things I believe in even more: just because you can, doesn’t mean you should; and there is a time and place for everything. A soldiers funeral is neither the time nor the place to stand up and spew your vitriol. What kind of sick and twisted person does that?
The only thing “sad” about Fred Phelps death is that a younger, possibly more eager person will step up to replace him. Rest assured, his legacy will continue. Someone will pick up his “cross” and carry to the next soldiers funeral.
Ironic, the rest of us will not have a chance to return the favor to Phelps, to picket and protest outside HIS funeral. The family has opted not to have one. RIP Fred Phelps.
