“If I had to give you one piece of advice, it would be this: don’t be intimidated by other people’s opinions. Only mediocrity is sure of itself, so take risks and do what you really want to do. Seek out people who aren’t afraid of making mistakes and who, therefore, do make mistakes. Because of that, their work often isn’t recognized, but they are precisely the kind of people who change the world and, after many mistakes, do something that will transform their own community completely.” – from ALPEH by Paulo Coelho
Looking back on my life it’s easy to see how, if I had been swayed by the opinions of others, things would have turned out very different. If I had stayed the course and followed “the plan” set out for me by parents life probably would have been easier. It certainly would have been mediocre, at best. At the same time my parents were raising me according to their divine plan, they were also raising me to live without fear; to stand-up for what I want and believe in. Which, coincidentally ended up biting them in the ass. I wasn’t afraid to stand-up and take risks. I made mistakes. I made plenty of mistakes! Often chided for being the black sheep of the family. But, in comparison, to those who stayed the course… I’m glad I decided to take a chance.
